Planning a baby blanket......

I have yet another baby entering this family in July.  I am not sure if it is a boy or girl, and won't know for a week or two but I just want to get started on the blanket I will be making for it.   Do you get that way?  A project that looms over you and you just need to get moving on it?  I did not want to do another ripple, I like them as they are fast but I just could not do another one.  I have been thinking about all of these yarn bits and thought that maybe I could incorporate them into a granny square themed blanket.  A win-win, a new baby gets a blanket and I use up bits and bobs of yarn.  None of this yarn is counted in my stash but I would still like to get rid of it in a useful way.  Today I purchased three skeins of the grey Berroco Modern Cotton on the right of the photo to use as the border for all squares.  I might need a bit more blue in the blanket if it is a boy, and maybe a bit more pink if it is a girl.  I can get those colors when I find out the gender, but for now I can get started on the squares.  Some might be solid and others have two colors, at least that is what I am thinking right now.  This might be a total bust, who knows!

Now friends I have not bought yarn in quite some time, actually December I think.  And I vowed not to buy anything that wasn't a necessity.  Well this gorgeous yarn above is not a necessity like the yarn for the baby blanket, but can you blame me for bringing it home.  In my defense it is soft and the colors are gorgeous.  It reminds me of all my blogging friends down under so it is really a tribute to them!  I know I am really stretching things thin here, ah well I just had to have it so I bought it home with me.  I am thinking about making another shawl, one that I will rarely wear but will love to make.

My ginormous banana palm is flowering, aren't these flowers interesting?

Little B is still coughing like a maniac.  He went back to the doctors on Tuesday and he is on even more meds.  He is still a pistol so he must not be feeling all that bad.

Hope you are having a good week.

Fabulous yarn, and it doesn't count as an illegal purchase at all if it reminds you of blogging friends. Clever idea to add the pink or blue in at the end. I hope your sweet little man is better soon. I remember coughs that have lingered on and on here too. Gorgeous banana palm flowers, they are new to me, very exotic. Hope you have a good weekend Meredith. CJ xx

That's too bad Buddy is still battling that cold! hope he feels better soon. I like the idea of crocheting squares for the blanket before know the gender, it will give you a head start! The plant looks like bird's beaks!

The recovered ones around here still sound sick, but are carrying on. Meanwhile, I was feeling a bit smug to be the only well one... until now, when I'm fighting off what I presume is the same creeping crud. The weather isn't helping. Congrats on the coming baby in the family - a great excuse to knit!

Life is too short to worry about getting too much yarn.. you use yours so fast that it should not be a problem. Me.. I'm so slow and such a non-organized person that I should control myself on yarn purchases. Yeh right. LOL! I'm glad the little guy is improving.. me too.. but still my lungs are bad. We've got some dryness and sun today so I might go out and soak some in. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Congratulations on another baby coming to your family. There is nothing better. :-). I think your blanket idea sounds just lovely. I've been using my bits and bobs leftover from the mittens in baby hats for the hospital . It's working well, but I did just order a sweaters worth of yarn for myself. We'll see how it goes. I was also congratulating myself on not catching any of the crud that's going around this year. Since I've been contained at home it hasn't been too hard to avoid it. But I think I picked something up at physical therapy last week and now I have a runny nose and a cough. Poor Dennis got it yesterday for me. So we didn't escape completely. I hope your little guy is feeling 100% very soon.
Blessings,Betsy

Little Buddy and I can cough a tune together. I hope he is improving quickly, wee lamb.
I love the colours of your yarn remnants, they'll make a fine baby blanket. Love your new yarn also, nothing better than being reminded of friends. Have a good weekend when it comes. xx

I had a little laugh at a shawl that "i will rarely wear but will love to make."
That sums me and shawls up completely!

Yes indeed, I can see why that yarn was so tempting, you were seduced! pretty stuff. I hope LB's coughing eases up, but I'm glad to hear he's still in good spirits. I am fighting the urge to cast anything on until this baby blanket is done. I'm telling you, lady. This is a test of self discipline in itself.

Lucky you with all those new babies arriving. Babies are so fun! Love your new yarn purchase. My philosophy is anytime you see gorgeous yarn it's necessary to purchase said gorgeous yarn. ;-)

Oh yes! I want to get started right away once an idea pops into my head. Luckily, these days not many new parents go with traditional pink or baby blue. You can use just about any color for baby things. I think that is GREAT!

That Sunshine Coast yarn is GORGEOUS!

Give Little B a big, big hug!!!

That's brilliant! If I see some yarn that reminds of you- I will buy it!!!! I love granny square blankets- I should attempt to make one. There seems to be so many crappy viruses around that go on and on and on. Hope your little guy can get rid of it soon. I love your plant!! Such an interesting blossom!

Nothing is better than a baby project to get you motivated. When you are racing the stork you have to go all in.

I'm sure your odds and ends of yarn will make a super baby blanket. I don't think I'd have been able to leave the new yarn on the shelf either, not only is the yarn itself so pretty but it's got the most wonderful name. Hope Little Buddy improves soon, I think it's really distressing seeing a child coughing when there's little you can do to ease it for them.

The flowers on your banana palm look very similar to the bird of paradise. Ranee (MN)

Your new yarn is beautiful! And the baby blanket will be so fun and colorful. Your banana palm flower reminds me (shape-wise) of a bird of paradise flower. Very unusual and pretty. Have a wonderful weekend.

You will make a gorgeous baby blanket out of the bits and bobs! Poor Little Buddy, hope he is better soon. This weather has made us all snotty and coughing here. Hugs!

Lucky lucky baby to be! I love your plan.

I also love the queensland yarns I made my green/purple top in the queensland collection yarn and I Love the feel.

Those coughs just linger and linger don't they? Seemed my kids would cough in their sleep all night after a tough cold. Somehow they rested, but I didnt!!

That flower is amazing!
I have a baby blanket for a as-of-yet genderless baby, too. I think I'm going to go with yellow or purple.
I sympathize with LB. I'm on antibiotics and still coughing. That's not fair!

I like your bits and bobs of yarn. Good way to use them up in an afghan. I'm thinking of going to a fiber show/sale tomorrow but not sure if I really need to go and buy anything right now. It would be fun to look but it will make my day too long since I also have a memorial service for a former coworker to go to. Sigh! I'm pre-shrinking flannel fabric today for a quilt I need to make this year for my oldest granddaughter. Then I'll get to cutting then sewing. May is too soon so it will be for her Christmas gift. Hope Buddy's cough subsides soon. No fun to have a lingering cough. Take care!

I'm excited to see what you come up with for the baby blanket!
As for the yarn for the shawl... I am all about that purchase Girlfriend!!! It's Gorgeous and I can't stop myself when it comes to shawls either.
I HATE IT that our Sweet Little Buddy has been so sick while I was taking an unplanned blogging break here...
My daughter is going through a divorce and she and her two children were living her for 3 months so things just got very full in my life...
I am way behind on what everyone is up to.
I will be in prayer for our Sweet Guy.

Gorgeous yarn and everyone deserves a treat now and then even when on a yarn diet. Looking forward to seeing how it knits up. Also seeing the baby blanket develop. There is something very special about making things for a new baby. I hope Little B recovers soon and gets rid of that nasty cough.

Once in a while there is yarn that you just HAVE to bring home :-)
Looks lovely!
And I can't wait to see the first grannies of the new baby blanket.
I'm planning a baby blanket too, but first 2 other small projects have to be finished.
Have a great weekend, Sigrid

I am intrigued by your yarn. I have never seen it in Australia, and I live in Queensland and my son lives on the Sunshine Coast!! I think it must be a US yarn and they just use the Australian place names to name the colourways.

No one can blame you for buying more wool my friend....you needed it. lol Who am I to say anything to anyone about having too much wool? :)
Lovely flowers. Hope little Buddy gets over the coughing. I've just finished crocheting a baby blanket and it was fun to make. Good luck with yours. xx

This sentence sprang into my eyes: "Making another shawl, one that I will rarely wear but will love to make."
I've made a lot of things because I loved to. And I don't wear them. So nice to see that I am not alone. :-) Have a nice week! Regula

Scrolling to the top of your post, I had to look twice when I saw the words "Queensland" and "Sunshine Coast". ???? Australian? How interesting that you had chosen that yarn considering the weather on the Sunshine Coast is probably a lot like yours.

In response to your Anonymous reader's comment, it looks like it is not an Australian yarn at all but marketed by a company in America...so that would explain why we Aussies haven't seen it here. Interestingly Ravelry's yarn page for Queensland Collection yarn says "Design support from Ella Rae" which is a yarn line by Leanne Prouse, an Australian knitwear designer. I have used one Ella Rae yarn before and absolutely loved its texture and handling. I ordered some more at the time even though I wasn't sure what it would become - I just knew I needed to use it again!

I'm sure that your Sunshine Coast yarn will speak to you when the right project comes along. It's okay to enjoy yarn for the sake of enjoying it. :-)

As long as LB is able to play "like a pistol" as you say, it's a good sign. Wishing him a full recovery (and relief to you) as soon as possible. xx
