Wrestling the wild beast.................

I thought that title would catch your attention.  What wild beast am I wrestling you ask?  Well here it/he is.  This little boy with all this long hair!

It is a windy, blustery day out so I thought I might have a go at this mop.  Not my favorite thing to do, and certainly not Little Buddy's.   I think they should have mini courses when you are a Mom, things you need to take to make you life easier like how to cut a squirmy little boy's hair in 20 minutes or less.  I could use that one.  The thing about Motherhood, Sisterhood and Daughterhood is that you need so much information that you have not been taught.  How to cut hair, give advice, not give advice, take care of an aging parent, become the parent, how much to get involved, how hard it is not to.........so much we need to learn.  Where are the courses for all of that?  Oh and being a wife, don't even get me started on all the knowledge I need for that, I think that could be a doctorate program right there.

Here is the after bath photo, by the sweet look on his face you would never know Little Buddy becomes as squirmy as a snake trying to be caught when his hair is being cut.   He makes it look like we have had the best time, maybe he is feeling the relief that it is all over and he can play.  Notice his face is clean, too.  No crumbs from breakfast like in the photo above.

Little Buddy's head is an interesting shape due to his severe prematurity.  He also has two shunts that stick out a bit making the haircut even more of a challenge.   So far so good I think.  There will be modifications, but for now I am pooped out and it is only 9:30 in the morning.

Looks like Monkey is ready to use the potty even if Little Buddy isn't?   He makes me laugh.

This afternoon I am heading off on an adventure with my knitting friend Cathy.  We are driving almost to Sarasota to investigate the Earth Box, a container/growing unit for veggies and flowers.  She has two of them and just loves them.  It all started here with my little tomatoes.

I was just so darn excited that I grew three little tomatoes from a plant I bought at Home Depot, that I wanted to grow more things.  In Florida we don't have plots or allotments, and where I live we have deer, deer that eat everything.  I want a system I can keep inside my screened in porch area, sort of like a big pot that has a drainage unit to control all the rain we get in the summer.  I am excited about the prospect of growing a few things.

I ate one little tomato and it was delicious!  I am thinking tomatoes, herbs and maybe lettuce?

Last night I started on a baby hat to make for Taci to take to Brazil.  I have some beautiful yarn left over from the African Flower Baby Blanket I made a year ago.  I think this will be perfect.

How about a light pink one with a dark pink flower, and a dark pink one with a light pink flower?  I hope you will join Taci on her quest to take 200 baby and toddler hats on her trip.  Wouldn't it be fantastic if she exceeded her goal?  My own projects can wait a bit, this is much more important.

Happy Saturday.

  1. Well, I think Buddy is a handsome little boy and you did a great job with that hair cut.

  2. Tiger hates to get his hair cut also! I can tell you squirmy little boys are hard to shear! You did a good job. Love the little hat yarn. Have a fun day!

  3. You certainly caught my attention with your title, it really made me smile when I realised you were referring to Little Buddy who looks so angelic with his new haircut. My Grandson is not showing a lot of interest in his potty either...they will when they are ready. There is nothing nicer than eating your own produce that you have grown. Good luck with your new venture.

  4. You did an awesome job on Little Buddy's hair!! And you're correct - sometimes pictures do NOT speak louder than words since it looks like your cut job was Easy Peasy :-}}}
Please post pictures of the Earth box container or Cathy's container if you didn't buy one!! I didn't even plant tomatoes last summer due to all the rabbits we have around here and Augie likes to eat the dirt I use around the plants. A container may be the answer!!

  5. Great job on Little buddies hair! He looks great. That is so nice of you to make the hat. I hope she gets to take her two hundred hats. The tomatoes look great. I could go for a BLT right now! Those tomatoes made me crave one. Plus they are so perfect looking. No blemishes, end rot, etc.

  6. You did a good job on his hair. I know how hard it can be, I've tried it in my boys and I always vow to never do it again. It's exhausting in every way.

He looks very handsome! I may be a little bit jealousy of those tomatoes. Yummy! I can't seem to be able to keep any sort of plants alive so I opt for stemmed flowers in a vase ;)

Thanks for your comment. Funny story about the water on the fringe. I'm thinking that it was probably a good thing she spilled the water instead of you standing bewildered in a down pour haha

    Have a great day Meredith!

  9. You are very brave to cut Little Buddy's hair Meredith! I have never tried it but my children all seem to like to cut their own hair (with disastrous results). I would love to grow tomatoes but unfortunately, here in Glasgow they won't ripen unless inside or in a green house. Have a lovely Sunday my friend. And yes, when you find this course that teaches you everything, I am coming, too. xxx

  10. You did a wonderful job cutting his hair, and he does look great!
How nice that you know how to knit with double pointed needles - how much I still need to learn!
    Have a lovely weekend! xx

  11. Good job on the barber job! I remember cutting everyones hair when the kids were little. Dayle has never let me forget when I did his and I gave him "square ear holes". We're having a sunny, lazy day here. I can't wait to see your garden boxes!
    ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  15. Little Buddy's hair looks great despite his penchant for being a wiggle worm! Oh good luck figuring out your garden. There is nothing I like more than picking lettuce and tomatoes from mine. Are you going to put some basil in with them? Fresh basil on those tomatoes - mmmmmm! I'm jealous that you can grow them now.

  16. Good job on that barnet, and well done on your tomatoes. Salad leaves are always a great thing to grow, you can snip a few fresh every day as you need them. It must be a bit of a nuisance to have so many deer around. I hope you've recovered from your early exhaustion now. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. CJ xx (PS Barnet is Cockney rhyming slang for hair, just in case you didn't know. Cx)

  17. Love your LB photos, Mere. You did a great job on the haircut!!! Can't believe you have "real" tomatoes in January. We can't even get them to ripen in our yard in the middle of summer!

  18. Well done Buddy's hair is fab. I too cut my childrens hair still.
Even at 17 and 26 . Over the years I think I have got quite good..

  19. You did a great job with Little Buddy's haircut. He looks quite handsome.

I gave Stephen exactly ONE haircut. It was a disaster of a buzz cut. Good thing he was too little to really care.

  20. Wow Meredth! You did great on LB's hair. I used to cut our boys hair, and I still cut Dennis' and I remember how the little boys twisted and turned and I didnt have the extra things like shunts, etc. complicating things. I don't envy you the haircuts, but I sure do love that smile he has. He looks so angelic and innocent. :-) I'm looking forward to hearing how your gardening expedition turned out. I think I'm going to plant vegetables at home next summer and not at the lake. We had a HUGE deer problem there last year and lost almost half of our produce. THere are also cougar and bears around so I'm not sure which animal actually ate everything.
Have you ever heard of "knitted knockers" for mastectomy patients? You can find them at www.knittedknockers.org if you're interested. I've been making them for awhile now, but haven't posted about them. I may post them soon. I'm making a couple tonight for a good friend at church who just had a mastectomy. And then, before I finish my poncho I want to make a few sweater sets for Taci. Hats too. She is such a sweetheart. Gosh I wish we could all get together and knit every week. And play with LB.
    Blessings my friend,
    Betsy

  21. There are sure a lot of courses I would have benefitted from and still would! My friend Shannon's kids are 7 and 9 , mine are 28 and 32! Something's she worries about I just smile and tell her it's no biggie they are just tadpoles still. I know a lot more now ! Your little sprout looks quite handsome with his new haircut, such a cutie!! You did a really good job. Container growing is fun, you could grow cucumbers too on a little trellis or even scarlet runner beans. Always fun things to think about!!

  22. You did really good friend! His haircut is adorable! And yes I could use some of those life manuals please!!! I am pumped to hear about your garden happenings!! Sounds like you are going to have some awesome harvests friend! Wishing you a great weekend! Nicole xo

  23. Oh gosh, all that by 9:30 a.m. Ha! It looks great. Little boys should have cute little messy haircuts. :) I would never have attempted to cut my boys hair. Yusef came home one time after his dad took him out for one and he came back crying, put a baseball cap on and said he wouldn't be taking it off until his hair grew back. Oops! Growing your own food is a wonderful thing and that sandwich looks awesome. Fresh tomatoes are the best. The baby hats will be well received. Hugs, Tammy

  26. Your hairdressing skills are immense, LB looks quite the smart young gentleman!

I tried to cut my eldest son's hair once, but what with the squirming and squawking I never attempted it again!

  27. You're right! He looks so angelic one wants to think you've stretched the story!
Little hats are fun to knit. What pretty colors too.
I'll be curious to see what an earth box is.
We have room for small gardens here. There are deer but nit usually this far into the sub division. We're thinking of raised beds this year so I can have easier access. I love homegrown veggies!

  28. You did a great job with his haircut, he looks quite the handsome little Buddy now.
I love to grow and pick a little bit of produce for the kitchen.I could never be self sufficient as my garden is very small but I really enjoyed growing tomatoes, herbs and lettuce last year.
A beautiful idea for the hat drive and your yarn looks delicious.
    Happy Sunday x

  29. You could have fooled me that you need a lesson in hair cutting! You did a great job on Little Buddy's handsome cut!

I am going to be interested to hear more about the gardening ideas!! I'd like to grow a few things this year, too... Keep us posted, please.

Our LYS has done hats and squares and it is nice to help in some small way to make things a bit better for someone far away. Your hats are going to be wonderful, Meredith. Kudos to you. blessings and hugs ~ tanna

  30. Your baby hats will be beautiful, the colours are so lovely. I can totally understand the need for a course in all things parenting, and I could do with one in husband wrangling too right now - grrrr!!! Buddy's haircut looks great though doesn't it, good job!! xx

  31. Wow good for you! Excellent haircut skills. I just love the little ones fresh from their bath and sweet looking.
I know it only January, but I'm already dreaming of what to grow in the garden this year. Your tomatoes look great! Have fun planning the next crop.

  32. Well done Meredith Little Buddies hair looks great you've done a fabulous job, I used to hate cutting my boys hair when they were young too, poor things it nearly always came out lopsided. Your growing veg idea sounds great, there's nothing nicer than growing your own. I'm definitely gonna make some hats for Taci but I need to know where to send them and she hasn't answered my email yet. Have a great week. :) xx

  33. You are SO brave. I have to admit that I always paid a professional to deal with my kids' hair. Yeah, I'm a wimp that way.

  34. Oh how typical is it for little boys to squirm when it's hair cut time!!! lol I have 2 grown squirmers myself but remember it well. Awww...and look at that innocent little face after the haircut. lol I remember going through the reverse roll or parenting with my father...it's a big job and an interesting journey indeed. Love the gorgeous hat you're making, love the colour.
    Cheers, Anita.

  35. Your little guy looks quite charming and so hard to believe that he squirmed at all, lol. Sometimes children sit better for a professional than a mom. My grandson has had 2-3 haircuts already. I could have cried when they snipped off baby curls, but he is blessed to have more where that came from. Those tomatoes, oh my, my favorite veggie, or are they fruits, the debate lives on. A BLT would do quite nicely, thank you very much. Also you know of which I speak, thank you again. Yes, I am back to blogging, have missed everyone. It has been over 2 months and I finally posted today. I need to back track on friends posts. I'm sure everyone has been up to all sorts of interesting things.

  39. I totally agree about the hair cut lessons. I cut my boys hair and my husbands. I had to learn by just doing. :-))

Please tell me more about your gardening and your plants as you start your new hobby.

  40. Oh if I had to read the course line up and syllabus or requirements for actually getting this whole parenting/wife/good friend thing down. I would've resigned before we started, ha!

LB looks great, I took the easy route with my kid and took him to one of those toddler cuts places. But somehow to this day, and not that I mind, haircuts are usually my job.

It's so much fun watching LB grow. You nurture many a garden and growing thing, Mere.

Let us know how the Earth Box works. It's so exciting to grow your own food.

Thanks for the reminder about Taci's hat project. I need to get going on that.

Have a great week, Mere! :)

  42. Little Buddy's haircut is great - you did a really good job. I know what you mean about needing some training on all the roles we have to play! We grow tomatoes and the homegrown ones always taste so much better. You wee hats will lovely - the yarn looks very soft. I'm going to try and get some done too.

  43. Your post has started me thinking about all the things we do and as you say are not taught them. We do the best we can with the information we have at the time, what more can we do. It sounds to be like you do very well indeed. Sending love across the miles x
