Five thoughts on Friday.......

I am joining in with Amy at Love Made My Home for Five on Friday today.  I swear I am going to try and keep it at five, but you know me I am chatty.

Yesterday Little Buddy and I went to the eye doctor who was thrilled this little one can now identify letters.  He was able to see the letters posted on the screen and we found out that his right eye is working much better than his left.  We know his left eye rotates in, you can see it in the photo above, but we did not suspect his vision was so bad in that eye.  He needs surgery to straighten it out in hopes his brain will continues to read the visual messages it receives from the left eye.  So we are now waiting to hear when that surgery will be.

Speaking of surgery, this boy has had a tough day.  He had a cyst removed from his forehead this morning, along with another that was drained from his neck.  Oh and I forgot shots!!!!  The worst part of it was getting out of the car, Max slipped and could not get up without help.  This is becoming a little more common for him, but adding the height of the car with the slip and that means an injury.  He has now received some pain medication and is happily sleeping, oh and he got a few treats too!
He looks like he has been in a barroom brawl!  I will be keeping a close eye on him this weekend and doping him up as needed, there is nothing worse than an animal in pain.

This is what greeted me this morning.  It was raining so hard out, not the best day to take Little Buddy to school or Max to the Vet.  It did stop to just a sprinkle during those excursions so I am thankful for that.  I love rain so much, rain and gray skies.  Of course now that I can stay in the rest of the day it has cleared up.  I hope all of you in the East experiencing the "Monster Storm" are all safe and cozy in your homes.  Why is every weather system now the owner of some name?

I went jean shopping yesterday I was in desperate need, you see I wear a lot of jean capri pants to work and I bust the knees out of them in no time at all.  I have fixed a few pair, but two of them were just looking to ratty to wear even with the repairs, so I decided to make my very favorite pair into shorts.  I cut them off, serged the ends, rolled them up and sewed them so they won't come undone.  It was a quick fix and now I have a fun and soft pair of shorts to wear.

With my second pair I decided to make a skirt like my wonderful sewing/knitting/awesome friend Jo made at the end of December.  Her skirt turned out terrific so I thought I might try to re-purpose one for myself.  There are loads of tutorials on the internet, and Pinterest on how to do this.  I found Steffi's  tutorial to be amazingly helpful. I followed it step by step with  the exception of inserting a triangle in the side seams, I just inserted in the front and back. It was fun to make and it fits!  I think I am actually going to use this skirt all the time.

This is a closer view of the front insert.

I know you don't want to see my actual backside so how about just seeing the backside of the skirt?  These jeans were originally on sale from Target, not expensive and really I did not think they fit very well.  But now with a little work I have a great skirt that will go with everything.

My husband is gone for the weekend and Little Buddy came home from school with a clear runny nose and a big attitude.  He is napping now so I have decided we are laying low all weekend long.  I had gone to the grocery store yesterday to stock up, I have my weaving and baby blanket to work on and as the temperature dips I have a cozy house to stay in.  I can watch my furry boy to make sure he is okay and my little boy to make sure that runny nose is not turning into something far worse.  Based on his tantrum earlier I think I might have a sick boy on my hands.

I am looking forward to taking the weekend as it comes, at a slower pace.  How about you?

  1. Sounds like a rough day, hope Max is feeling better soon. Lets hope that after a good nights sleep Little Buddy will be over the worse and it is just a sniffle. 2. Wowsers, that rain!!!! Not a time to be outside! Poor Max, not a good day for him, I hope that he will be OK and feeling himself again soon, I am sure having a quiet weekend at home with you will help. It is great that Buddy is doing well too, another progress mile! Enjoy your weekend at home doing what you want to and making skirts and shorts - which look great by the way!!! Thank you for joining Five On Friday, happy weekend! xx

  3. Poor chaps, I hope they're both all better very soon. Lots of rain here this morning as well. They've started naming storms in this country now. The last one was called Frank which is quite a nice open friendly name. I'm thinking they should have gone for something a bit darker like Ebeneezer or Voldemort or something. I hope you have a nice quiet relaxing weekend. It sounds as if Max and your little Buddy might be on the quiet side. CJ xx

  5. Oh poor, poor Max. He looks so pitiful. It just breaks my heart when animals are in pain because they can't tell you what's happening with them. Give him a big kiss for me. I also hope Little Buddy's just has a runny nose and nothing worse. Maybe if you stay in and have play time and not much else to do, all will be well for him. And you'll be able to get a lot accomplished. That rain is amazing. We're having rain here too and 51°! Unheard of for January in the Northwest. We still have ice and snow on the street in front of our house but it won't last long at this rate. Have a lovely weekend and I'll be praying for both of your boys Meredith.
    Blessings, Betsy

  6. You had a busy day. Poor Max. I bet it was hard getting him and little Buddy in the house. I think I would hang around home this weekend too.
When my granddaughter was around four one of her eyes turned in. She called it her crazy eye. I told my son that I didn't want anything for Christmas but I wanted them to take her to a specialist. I know it isn't the same thing that LB has. They ended up operating on both eyes. She hasn't had any problems since.
That is great that he can recognize his letters. I hope he was just tired and isn't getting sick. Hugs

  7. Max, feel better! Dug says that he hopes your meds help. He has meds for inflammation and they are helping a lot.

Please give him a kiss from me. :-)

  8. Sounds like a good plan to lie low. We had a 2 hour early release and the snow has stopped now. It was a nice treat and gave me an early, much needed nap to start my weekend off!

  11. Poor Max. I agree that it's awful to see an animal in pain or suffering. Your jean skirt is brilliant. I'm going to have a look at that tutorial. Thanks for the link!

  12. Oh, you've had a tough day, for sure, worrying about your precious ones and keeping them well and cared for. Your little skirt is darling and it is always nice to recycle in such a creative way. It sounds like you will be content and cozy while you watch over your sweeties this weekend. Take care xo Karen

  17. This brings back memories, Meredith. I had corrective surgery on my left eye as a child and it is still weaker than my right eye, but I'm OK with that. I have a small pile of books that my mom bought and read to me during the three days of recovery.

  18. You are as always, a busy lady! The 'lazy' eye runs in our family. I remember my brother had surgery for it when he was younger.
I hope Buddy's illness passes and you get some crafting time this weekend.

  19. Oh, what a cutie your little boy is! Wishing all the best for the surgery... and a speedy recovery to your dog as well.
Your sewing works are very inspiring. Happy weekend!

  20. Hope both Little Budy and Max will be ok with tlc this weekend. How clever your are to alter your jeans to shorts and a skirt, they look good:)

  21. My boys! Goodness! Poor Maxie - please give him a big hug and kiss from Aunt Claudie. And also one for Little Buddy. I'm happy that he can see letters but I hate the thought of my little one going through surgery.

Waiting for the snow up here and hoping I can get home on Sunday for a 24 hour visit with Don and Scout.

  22. Poor, poor puppy dog. It really is awful seeing an animal in pain. Hopefully he is a quick healer.

That denims skirt looks great! I think I would wear that a lot. I just love anything denims!

It happens to be raining here too, which is very strange. Last week it was -40C and now it is just above zero and raining. Quite a mess. Not sure whether to wear my winter boots or my rubber boots!

    Have a great weekend Meredith!

  23. What a week! I've been in and trying to get over this cold all week. Now it's cold out so Charlie and I are snuggled in. National Figure Skating Championships on TV this weekend so I'll be watching that. Poor Max, hope he heals well. Good news about Little Buddy's eyes and bad news about a possible cold. Tis the season! Wishing you a restful weekend.
    hugs,
    Linda

Sorry I haven't commented lately. But with my mom's death and trying to clean out the condo with my siblings it has been a long week. Luckily we all get along!!!

  25. I hope Little Buddy's runny nose is nothing more than that and doesn't develop in to anything worse. Poor Max! I hope he gets better very soon. I'm so impressed with your skirt Meredith I would never have thought of doing that with a pair of jeans it looks terrific you clever thing. I hope you have a lovely peaceful craft filled weekend. :) xxx

  26. Praying that Lil Buddy weathers the cold well. I know with a shunt it can be harder on him. Attitude is a good sign....but I'm not their for the tantrums.
I love your jean skirts. Clever lady you are!

Poor Max. Looks worse than it is most likely.

Stay in. Lil Buddy can color. max will Love having you around.

  28. LB is so cute.. the surgery is scary but I hope it helps him. Sorry he has a cold.. I swear that when kids are in school that it's a germ factory! And poor Max.. :-( ::sigh:: I'm sorry to see what he's going through. I'm glad you're having rain.. since you love rain days. We had one day of sun and back to grey today. And aren't you clever making your own jean wardrobe! I hope LB will get better fast... but do enjoy your homey weekend. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  29. You are Ever so talented!! LOVE your jean skirt!!!
Poor Max!!! It's difficult having a senior dog!!! Augie is almost 14 and he had to make a visit to the vet. Having kidney problems and had to change his diet. Having a quiet weekend and enjoying the fireplace!!
Hope buddy stays well!! Sick little ones aren't much fun either!!

  30. Sending lots of buckets of TLC to your household this weekend (or that's what I would do if it were possible) because you all need it. Poor Max! Even when veterinary interventions are necessary and for the good, I always feel guilty for putting our pets through it when they look sad and sorry for themselves. We recently had our bunny (also named Max) desexed and you should have seen the look we got from him afterwards! (We had no idea your dog was also Max when we named our bunny).
It is good that there is an intervention available to help Little Buddy's left eye vision. Again, it is such a big thing to go through for one so small but children are resilient and heal quickly and before anyone knows it, he will be back up to speed with the best of them.
Your upcycled jeans are great. I love denim skirts for their ease of movement with their sturdiness so I can wear them while doing all sorts of activities. I am in the process of repairing my 'old faithful' jeans - the ones that are so comfy and perfect for gardening that I can't part with them! I am keen to see your repairs for the threadbare knees and compare notes.
May your weekend be calm and quiet with time for crochet progress. May it not be the metaphorical calm before the brewing illness storm - may a restful weekend head off any dramas. Take it easy!

  31. Oh, poor Max! Hope he will be okay. Glad to hear you are taking it easy this weekend. Hope Little B just needed some rest and won't actually be sick. I had a pair of boyfriend jeans from GAP that I loved but I wore out the knees and although it's the style to wear holey pants, it's not a style I care to to try and pull off. So I made them into shorts. But then I wore out the butt so they finally had to go. Ha! You did a good job with the shorts and skirt. Have a good Sunday!

  32. Oh my Meredith. What a five. Hope the surgery is not long in the waiting and it does all you hope for, for Little Buddy, will keep him and you in my thoughts. Animals in pain is always an emotional thing so wishing that well too And as to your sewing. Wow wow wow. Just loving the skirt. Great work. X

  33. Love the skirt and shorts. I'm sure they'll be worn a lot. Poor dear Max. Hope he's healing up. Our niece had similar eye surgery many years ago. It helped a lot with her eye. Hers still turns in a bit, but it was much worse than Little Buddy's to start with. Hope his surgery turns out a success.

  34. Oh dear, poor Max! I hope he's feeling better now. And Buddy too. I hope you had a relaxing weekend and that the rain let up? I think we've got the tail end of the monster storm but winds and rain rather than snow at least. Thanks for popping by :-) xx

  35. Hi Meredith!
Your kid is cute and I wish so so much for him to gain proper vision and recover soon after needed operation... Sending love and kisses to him!

Max looks tired... but I do hope he will be fine very soon!

Take care of yourself and yours!

    HUGS!!!

  36. Oh, no! Runny nose and surgery. Glad Little Buddy is doing OK. Poor Max. It's so hard to see them get old. Maggie has been falling a lot and it's so sad to see. I believe she had a stroke about a month ago, but recovered completely. She sleeps a lot and wants to be petted - as usual - and is still eating heartily and looking for treats, so I'm glad she's feeling well enough for all that. Love our fur babies!

  37. Hey Mer, we're experiencing Monster Storm's little cousin over here, entitled 'Storm Gertrude' and this little island has taken a battering over the last couple of days with lots of tree damage occurring, unfortunately for the poor trees. It's very cold and threatening snow now so a 'lay-low' weekend is in store here too. Luckily, I bought two old DVD's yesterday,'You've Got Mail' and 'Sleepless in Seattle' so armed with my trusty pins and hooks and yarn, guess what I intend doing? I love my old denim skirts but unfortunately, my old woman's body, with very little definition any longer, disagrees so they've been shoved to the back of my wardrobe for now, until I work out what to do with them! I wish surgery had been an option for me when I was Little Buddy's age, since I had an astygmatism in my right eye then but it has been corrected by me wearing glasses my whole life and now I couldn't do without them otherwise, I'd be half-blind! My young niece and nephew had the surgery and it was a great success for them. Hope you have a chilled-out weekend and your two patients get better quickly. Much Love. xxx
