Yesterday was my anniversary, 27 years! We had made plans to go out to dinner, something we never do. My oldest son was to, "brother sit" Little Buddy as you know he is not a baby and does not need a babysitter. Our reservations were at 6:30, which means of course we would be home by 8:30, just the way I like it. And let me just say I really needed to go out to dinner, it has been a heck of a week. One of the worst in my career as a therapist. I had some very difficult decisions to make after visiting one house where I see the children twice a week. I might not be there much longer for both of our well being, well especially mine, but that has yet to be determined.
So around 6:00 last night I was just about ready to jump into some other clothes and possible brush my hair, when I spotted a small little flashlight of Little Buddy's on the floor half chewed up. I picked it up and after dislodging the back of it I realized the batteries were not in it. A frantic search for batteries ensued with my husband, my oldest and myself. Mind you two puppies walked around oblivious to the whole thing. We looked everywhere and could not find them which left us to believe they were in someones belly.
Batteries can cause extreme damage and death to a dog or cat, although I have to believe a cat is smart enough not to eat them. So off to the emergency vet we went. They induced vomiting to see if they could bring them up, nope. There were lots of other items in those bellies like parts of a plastic toy and bits and bobs of grass, mulch and a rubber toy, but no batteries. Next up x-rays for both of them, yet no batteries. After leaving with a $640 bill, emergency vets are not cheap my fiends, we were off to our house to find them. An hour after we got home, with furniture moved, rugs picked up, sofas turned upside down my husband found all four of them outside on our lanai. Small button batteries are very close to the color of our pavers.
So lets just say my anniversary was not what I expected, but such is my life. I ate eggs and gluten free toast for dinner, my house is clean after all that upheaval and I have a husband who will drop his plans to go spend a ton of money on two crazy dogs who are constantly getting into trouble. That is saying a lot.
I wish they looked remorseful, but no they don't.
It is hard to stay mad at these two, because frankly they are pretty wonderful, they take such care with Little Buddy. They know he is fragile and never jump on him. They snuggle him and jump up on his bed to wake him up every morning. They really are wonderful, expensive........but wonderful.
And here we are at the vet's office. Me with no makeup, with an old t-shirt on and frankly I don't think I had even brushed my hair since I got out of the shower earlier in the day. Still it is an anniversary we won't soon forget.
Isn't that marriage in a nutshell? Life happens and you deal with it together. You can always go out to dinner another night.
ReplyDeleteAnniversaries are meant to be memorable! Wishing you a wonderful weekend and hope you get to celebrate at some point, without another vet visit! X Chy
ReplyDeleteYou two are the best. When you look at those furry faces what can you do. Congratulations on your 27th Anniversary. Happy Weekend.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness. What a story! It's never a dull moment with pets. I just spent $400 on one of the cats for an eye infection this week. Blood work showed he also has a thyroid issue. Now it's meds every few hours. Ugh. It's always something.
ReplyDeleteBelated Anniversary wishes to you both, wishing you any more happy years together. It will be an anniversary that you won't forget in a hurry. Still, all's well that ends well! They are cute despite their antics.
ReplyDeleteAh, such is the Life Of A Woman! Romance often takes a far backseat to being a mother and caretaker. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteSo glad the pups are okay! Having made a trip or two to the emergency vet myself, I too know how expensive they are. I wish it weren't so. One is already in anguish over the beloved pet, but the addition of a big bill just adds to the stress. Some families simply could not afford it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! What a crazy time, but the love and care you give the 'boys' is what makes me love you guys. Just glad no one ate the batteries and yes cats are smart enough NOT to eat them. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThe best laid plans........What a shame and sooooo expensive. What a lovely photo of you and your husband.I don't think I have seen a photo of him before.Your are a lovely couple.Barbarax
ReplyDeleteAw Meredith what a shame that your plans were scuppered, Happy Anniversary!! I do hope that you still get to go out for a belated anniversary meal, thank goodness no harm was done. That's a lovely photo of you both, you don't need makeup Meredith you are beautiful without it. Have a lovely weekend. xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a pain. Our cat is such a fussy eager we don't worry too much about her eating strange things. Hope your weekend is good.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! I’m so glad the pups are fine. We had a similar incident with missing sewing pins. Luckily no pins in any of the animals. The vet bill was hefty but I couldn’t imagine the wait and see approach. Hope you have a relaxing weekend.
ReplyDeleteHappy 27th Anniversary - one that had extra memories etched. Lovely Anniversary Memories photo of both of you. Never bored with those two lovely and way to busy dogs who love you all so much - and Buddy has the best of dog friends.
ReplyDeleteHugs.

*H*A*P*P*Y* * *A*N*N*I*V*E*R*S*A*R*Y*!*!* - I hope you get a "Do-Over" and go out to dinner over the weekend. $640!! Yowza! We're having Mocha spayed next week so we'll be doling out lots of $$$ to our vet, too. I'm glad your fur-boys are okay, though. Have a calmer weekend! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing without make up or brushed hair! You both manage to look happy despite this vet ordeal.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that the pups were ok, imagine adding emergency surgery to the already big bill. They look so innocent.... my own dog has the same trick up his sleeve, looking all innocent while planning his next escape. I hope your next working week is less stressful and brings a resolution to ongoing problems. xx
Isn't that the way it goes?!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you be positive and find the appreciation for a spouse to help out and miss out on his date, too!
congratulations and hope you get a rain date soon!
HaPpY, HaPpY Anniversary dear Meredith. I’m sorry the evening didn’t turn out as you expected, but at least everyone is okay. Maybe you can try for tonight? Is big brother still available? You look absolutely gorgeous my friend and your husband looks happy. He loves you, (and those puppies), and that’s what’s important. I know you already know that. Look at the faces on those two. You just CAN’T stay mad at them can you? I’m giving you a huge hug from snowy Washington.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Congratulations on 27 years of marriage. I was going to say "Happy Anniversary" but alarm and stress etc. in the throes of the moment when you should have been relaxing, do not go with 'happy'. At least you will remember your 27th and the final outcome was happy after all. May you enjoy that special dinner sometime soon. xx
ReplyDeleteOh dear, PUPPIES! We saw Bert's friend this morning. She was spotted slinking out of a bedroom which was a surprise. Further examination revealed an empty box of chocolates in the cupboard, although the box was undamaged. The vet induced vomiting just in case, and yes, up came 500g of chocolates. A mystery how she got the whole lot out without damaging the box. And SO lucky that she was spotted. Sorry it was a tricky week, and sorry your anniversary dinner wasn't what you were hoping for. Lovely photo of you both together though, and good that you are still smiling. Hope you have a good Sunday and a better week next week. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteThat is surely an anniversary you will always remember, but I hope maybe you can try to celebrate tonight or sometime soon. Glad the pups are OK at any rate. Have a good rest-of-the-weekend!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! We had a similar incident involving a cat and some missing ribbon.
ReplyDelete-Polly
I'm sorry you didn't get your dinner out, but I think you snagged one heck of a guy there! Happy Annivesary!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh......lol.....I'm sorry!!! This is one of the funniest posts you have written my love. lol I'm rolling around with laughter. I could see the flip sides of the vet situation and the chaos that went with it. After all that turmoil you find the batteries and at least, gladly, they were not in the bellies of your fur babies. I love their little faces by the way. Well Happy Anniversary to you both. I hope your work situation changes in a good way for you and it must be contagious because my work situation has been a little trying too. Sending you big hugs and kisses from across the oceans. xx
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary! These dogs are always the sorce of a good story. All the best. Regula
ReplyDeleteDear Meredith,
ReplyDeleteSo sorry your best laid plans for a night out went astray. Happy anniversary wishes to you both. Those two rascals look as though butter wouldn't melt in their mouths..... Next year you will look back on this anniversary with kinder thoughts as you remember the whole saga. I do hope you can have a nice meal together, and I do hope the work situation resolves.
Regards, Robyn
That's life I suppose. Glad it all ended as well as it could. You can always have dinner another time. Jo xxx
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! This one will go down in the books. I'm glad the pups are both okay.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! I'm sorry it wasn't what you'd hoped for, but I'm glad the pups are okay. We have a "weird" spot on our leather couch where our foxhound chewed the TV remote, including the battery. The chewed battery didn't seem to phase the dog, but they left a battery acid burn spot on our couch.
ReplyDeleteoh Mere! for once I have no words.
ReplyDeletebut in your last picture I see only a handsome man and a beautiful woman!
happy anniversary!
I'm so glad that it turned out the way it did. and just think... all the other little bits of debris swallowed that won't make it through the puppies now! nothing like a major cleanout and tune up of puppy bellies. XOXO
First of all you are so beautiful!!!!!! Oh those pets of ours and what they get into! So glad no surgery was needed. OUCH OUCH OUCH on the bills.
ReplyDelete(Not that it s all about me, but Fireman and I had a bad anniversary once. We had UNOS pizza downtown in chicago. When we went back to our car......it was not there. We immediately thought it was stolen. It was towed. We were right by a firehouse and troy went in and they said, we are 100% sure it got towed. They do this all the time.
You NEVER want to be asking a cab driver to find you an ATM ........he knows damn well where they are and he avoids them so you get a big cab bill...
Then we had to go to lower Wacker DRIVE CREEPY CREEPY CREEPY , felt like we were going to be jumped at any moment, to get to the POUND. Wait forever with everyone else that the city screwed and finally pay IN CASH ONLY to get your car back.
The kicker was it was NOT illegally parked. It was just an easy tow because no one was in front of it.
And we gave the firehouse our pizza to boot.
But I am so glad we were safe in the long run.
Happy Anniversary. You'll remember this one!
Oh my goodness! Those dogs are costing you some money. Worth every penny though! Wishing you both a happy anniversary.
ReplyDeletehappy anniversary!! that is one you will never ever forget :) My sister's one dog ate an entire bar of chocolate (it was a big one) and that cost over $500 bucks. Her golden doodle ate a stone (yup) that cost nearly $3000 from an emergency surgery to remove it. However, neither were on an anniversary!! Hugs to you.
ReplyDeleteWhat an anniversary story!! Oh dogs and life...and it just moves on. Thankful the dogs are ok after all that fuss at the vet clinic!!! Happy Anniversary Meredith and your dear husband of 27 years! God bless you both in the days and years ahead! Sorry you had a hard week with children you work with. Sigh...and get some good air in your lungs my friend! Praying you will have a better week!! HUGS!
ReplyDeleteOh, Meredith...if there's anyone who needs a lot more than just a dinner out - I'm thinking at least a weekend away complete with spa treatments! - it's you. I'm so sorry you didn't even get to go out to dinner to celebrate your anniversary. Even without makeup and your hair not brushed, I still think you look beautiful. And your hubby is very handsome. Happy anniversary to both of you - and try again next weekend; you both need and deserve it! xoxo
ReplyDeleteWell, first off, Happy Anniversary My Friend!
ReplyDeleteBut what an anniversary you had!!!
We would have done the exact same thing in our household of 2 older dogs, 1 puppy and 1 very old cat though. I love your beautiful, loving heart Meredith.
You care for your family and those dogs and other peoples children...
You are a blessing to so many.
You minister to all you come in contact with.
And I LOVE your anniversary picture!
Give Little Buddy and squeeze from me.... and those beautiful dogs too!
Love,
Danette
Hair brushed or not, old t-shirt or not, you look great and Happy Anniversary to you. Those pets of ours are stinkers, but I'm so glad your puppies are okay.
ReplyDeleteAndrea
Happy Memorable Anniversary!! So glad they did not swallow the batteries...but the evidence of some of what they did swallow...goodness gracious!! Cheers for your family coming together to search and rescue and provide such exemplary loving care!! xxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary. One to remember.
ReplyDeleteAmalia
xo
Happy Anniversary! Glad the puppies were alright after all of that and did not eat the batteries.
ReplyDeleteSorry about your vet bill. They are hilarious! I think they must have twice as much fun, being there are two of them. You look beautiful. Happy Anniversary.
