Knitting Ornmaents

On the way to visit my Mother at her nursing home yesterday I got a brilliant idea.  An ornament for my knitting friends.  I belong to a knitting group.  We meet approximately every other Friday during the school year.  These are a lovely group of women.  Really I haven't met many knitter's or people who crochet who aren't lovely.  This Friday we are having an ornament exchange.  I thought I'd make a little something for everyone.  I already had most of the items I would need on hand.  So when I got home from that visit, I got out my supplies and got to work.

You will need:
Styrofoam balls, tooth picks, wooden beads, pins, superglue, ribbon, Christmas ornament hooks and odds and ends of yarn.

To make your little knitting needles just glue the wooden beads (or any beads you desire) to the ends of the toothpicks.  My toothpicks had a blunt end, if yours don't just cut off the ends, and use a  nail file to file away any rough edges.

Wrap the Styrofoam ball with yarn, making sure to cover the entire ball.  I would think white yarn would make this a lot easier, but colors are fun too.  It is a great way to use up little bits and bobs of your stash.

Be sure your Styrofoam ball isn't too big, it will dwarf your home made little knitting needles.

Cut off a  piece of ribbon, secure the ribbon and the end of your yarn with a pin. You can just see the pin hiding at the base of the ribbon.  Insert your knitting needles after they are dry, add a hook and you are ready to go.  Super easy, but super cute.

The only thing I had to buy for this little project was the glue and the hooks.  So it was inexpensive, too!

My Christmas tree is not up yet so you get a picture of them hanging from the light over my kitchen table.  What knitting friend wouldn't want these?  I think they are fun.  Knitting ornaments are a great way to spread some knitting love, don't you think?

Hope you give it a try.

Mere, I'm in love. I just emailed your link to one of my craft bezzies and threatened a lunch time trip to the local craft store. I will take the street car, shamelessly. Afterall, isn't that what those public transportation apps are for? Quickly acquiring craft elements during lunch hours? Thanks for sharing! Let's hope I don't superglue myself to death!
