Little Buddy is so amazing. A few weeks ago in Physical Therapy he wanted to ride the tricycle. So the lovely PT placed him on it, arranged his feet in the special pedals and showed him how to push down on the pedals. Darned if that little boy didn't move those pedals several repetitions all by himself once she got him going. She would start him off, he would pedal all by himself and then stop and they would start all over again. He rode on that little tricycle on the smooth floors of the PT office for a half an hour. I cried, and believe me it takes a lot for me to cry as far as therapy is concerned. He has cerebral palsy, he was born with no heart beat and not breathing, at the age of 3 this little one should not be able to ride a bike, not even a tricycle.
As soon as we got home from therapy I got on my computer ordered the bike and the special pedals and waited for them to arrive. He has now has his little bike for just over a week. And this little determined boy can move those pedals all by himself. He rarely needs help getting started he has figured out that if you move the pedals backward a bit your feet end up in the right position and you get get yourself moving forward by pushing down on the pedals. Now we know that kids without special needs figure all this out pretty fast, but Little Buddy has figured it out also and that is amazing!!!
He can ride up to 1/2 a mile, yes you read that right 1/2 mile. Now of course he starts and stops along the way but the completed distance is 1/2 mile and that is incredible. Watch out Tour de France, in a few years you just might have your first special needs participant!
I sent a video of him riding his bike to all of his old therapist's and his medical foster family and of course my family. I think there were quite a few tears shed. His medical foster father showed the video to all the nurses that took care of him in the NICU, I think it made their day.
So the following are just the crappiest pictures of him on his bike, he was moving so I was having trouble getting him from the right angle, but I wanted to share his success with all of you.. And as he told his brother on the phone, "I ride a bike all by myself!" Well done little one. You amaze us everyday.
Isn't he something!
Oh, you bet he is a SOMETHING! And yes, I need a tissue. Little Buddy has so much to teach us all.
ReplyDeleteWith love, E.

ReplyDeleteFANTASTIC!!!!!!! This is so brilliant, I think that you may have a cycling paralympian on your hands, two sportsmen in your family with Mr 20 the swimmer and now Buddy the cyclist perhaps! I know that it sounds silly, but I love that the bike is just a normal bike but with special pedals so that no one else would even know there was anything different, the things that are made these days are so good aren't they. I can imagine that you were sobbing for ages about this amazing achievement by Buddy, he really is a star and will go very far I reckon! xx
ReplyDeleteWow Meredith how amazing is that? You have every reason to be proud and think we could all use a few lessons from Little Buddy, well done him...
