Purl Soho...........

Welcome to Purl Soho my friends.  Do you want to visit with me?  I think those of us who knit and crochet have all heard about this amazing store.  The yarn is gorgeous, the photography is beautiful, and the patterns have simple lines that create incredible garments.

When I went to NYC I was not even thinking about visiting any yarn stores.  Actually, I have not bought yarn since last December, and that was to complete a project.  I have been really trying to use the yarn I have and not buy more until my stash was even more under control.

But when presented with the opportunity to visit this incredible store how could I not jump at the chance to go?  Claudia, with her savvy NYC traveling skills got us to the subway, and all the way to SOHO to visit this store.  It was sooooooo hot on Saturday afternoon when we were traveling, I mean even hot for me, and I live in Florida.  It was so worth the trip, as really, when will I ever be back?

As you enter the store you see this amazing wall of Liberty of London fabrics.  Gorgeous colors, with an incredible silky texture, popping off the wall.   This might be the most beautiful fabric I have ever seen, and soooooo expensive but worth it if you are an incredible seamstress, which I am not.  Still I could not stop looking at them and touching them, which I am sure the employees did not like.

The store is long and narrow.  Everywhere you turn are beautiful yarns to stroke.  They have their own yarn of course and many other brands.  They have threads for weaving, buttons, trims, and sewing and knitting patterns everywhere.  The orange, berry and cream shawl folded up on the front table was featured in their email just the day before our visit.

I am trying to be better about yarn purchasing , trying to buy for a project rather than buying a ton of yarn just for the sake of having it like I have in the past.  I was lucky to have a Purl Soho project in mind even before I knew I was going to visit the store, but I still thought a lot about it before my purchase.  It was easy to get swept up in the moment, as you all know yarn and fabric fumes can knock you senseless until you are spending your life savings in mere seconds.

I cold have bought yards and yards of this, just look at the amazing detail and colors in these fabrics.

There were even kits to make the famous sheep pillow.  I was tempted but already have two sheep fluffies on display at my house.

I settled on this, two skeins of Purl Soho Cattail Silk, size 3 needles because I got rid of all my extra needles a while back during a craft/yarn purge, and this wee little loom to make coasters with.  I could not resist it, believe me I tried.  The Cattail Silk is to make the Circular Yoke Summer Shirt, a project I have had my eye on, but did not have yarn in the appropriate weight in my stash.

It was well worth the hot trip down to SOHO to see this amazing store.  And frankly vacation yarn should never even count towards stash, right?

I will leave you with one last photo of my dear, dear sister Claudia and I.  This was taken right before the show started.  We were both so excited to see Don perform.  I just adore both of them so much.  They are just the kindest people I know.

What a great trip! You are so lucky to have a wonderful sister. I heard about this show on NPR and it sounded great. How sad that it's closing. I know that there are a lot of plays running and competition in the NY theater world is intense.

You were so controlled at Purl Soho. I don't know how to did it. I'll have to look up that top.

I've been wanting one of those little looms. You'll have to let us know how you like that one!

Oh my.. I so enjoyed seeing you and Claudia visit this amazing place. I'm *SO* glad that you broke your yarn fast and succumbed to some retail therapy. :-) I can't wait to see what you do with that little loom and see you knit that classy summer top. You go girl! Cosmopolitan ladies! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Ah, Sister Time is so precious. You were wise to commemorate it with a purchase like the little loom, something you can use over and over again, each time remembering your special trip with Claudia. So glad you got to go and have a lovely weekend with favourite people.

I'm not a knitter, but that store looks amazing. And I can sew and one of life's pleasures is touching pretty fabric and choosing a yard or two to make something. Someday I am going to buy some Liberty fabric.

What a joy to visit Purl Soho along with you. Such a feast for the eyes. I am with you, holiday shopping doesn't count...

It's enough to turn my eyes green and curl my toes. I am not really envious as I will never go there, I am so happy that you made it.

I gasped a bit when I saw Purl Soho, lucky, lucky you. I know I would be overcome with yarn and fabric fumes. I feel a bit dizzy just looking at the pictures. CJ xx

I'VE BEEN THERE! I loved the store but was surprised at the long and narrowness of it. That did not stop me from buying though :) Looks like you had a fabulous time!

I'm so glad you are having a wonderful vacation in NYC. It is one of my favorite destinations (but expensive - so lucky you have a sister there!) I think I have been to Purl Soho but it was early in my fiber efforts and it was too overwhelming. I do have their 3-in-1 swatch maker loom, plus I regularly refer to the explanation of how to hemstitch weaving that is on their web site. When I travel I almost always check out the LYS. I ask if they have anything produced locally, which is how I end up with a LOT of sock yarn, plus a few sweaters worth as well.

Vacation yarn definitely does NOT count. I’m so glad you visited Purl Soho for all os us who probably won’t make it there ourselves. And now your beautiful top made with the yarn will belong just a bit to all of us, so it was a great investment Meredith. :-)
Your visit to Claudia and Don sounds just lovely although it is sad that the show is ending so soon.
Many Blessings,
Betsy

I may be the only non knitter that follows you. simply because you're fabulous in so many ways. and I even admire and enjoy the yarny tales! that store is beautiful. and the history it no doubt has.
the two of you are pure delight. well. I mean you and Claudia not you and the store. have a wonderful week! xo

Love your comment about yarn and fabric fumes knocking you senseless and your suggestion that yarn (in my case fabric) bought on vacation doesn't really count toward your stash. I just returned from a short trip to Bar Harbor, and let's just say I did my part to help the economy while stopping at a few quilt shops in the arera. ;-)

You really managed to cover a lot of ground during your trip - that's the advantage of having someone who knows their way around with you. It looks/sounds like a wonderful trip, and I can't wait to see what your top looks like with that amazing yarn.

I'm truly loving these posts of your trip, especially of you, Claudia and Don and the love between you. It warms my heart.
We can excuse your yarn purchase because you were buying for a project you had in mind AND you had no equivalent in your stash that was suitable PLUS I think souvenir yarn is allowed! Stash? What stash?

The Purl Soho shop looks amazing. Please forgive me but I need to ask - was the shop wheelchair accessible? Looking at your first photo, I can see steps but there seems to be a section of the building frontage that doesn't have steps - is that the case? I am hoping it is a ramp to access all the businesses in the building. I am always keen to know how accessible different cities are, especially New York because that is a city on my 'to see' list (just a dream at this point). How cool would it be to do a worldwide yarn trawl? (more dreamings...)

Thanks Meredith for sharing your trip and maybe I will see you around Instagram. I hope you will not desert your blog for Instagram as so many bloggers already have done.

Oh, good golly!!!!!!! I would have died on the spot to see that much glory in one place.

It's not stash yarn, it's supporting a local business! (Local to somebody, anyway.) Of course you had to go.

Ooh, Liberty fabric is amazing. I have a piece of Liberty knit I can't bring myself to cut into. It sits with my sewing stuff and every so often I stroke or and think how beautiful it is. :)

Sounds like you had a great time with your sis.
