Crochet Bowls

I am still working on these gosh darned bowls.  I have used a stiffening spray, and even starch and they are really not that stiff.
The little one is cute, but not ready to hold anything of any weight
The medium sized bowl is maintaining it's shape but still I don't think I would put a thing in it.
Still they are holding their own  But the large bowl.........
Let's just say that no amount of stiffening spray is going to help this.  So I threw it in the washer and it is being felted as we speak.
Week 3 of the weeding experiment is coming to an end, and look there is very little weeding to do.  I think I am onto something with the baking soda.  Looking at this picture I really need to trim some of these plants down, but that is not happening this weekend.
 Hooray, no weeding for me!!!!
Happy three day weekend to those of you in the US.  I plan on cleaning out my garage, in 90 degree heat!  Wow, fun for me.

I don't know how to crochet, so your bowls seem especially nice to me.

I am definitely gonna try the baking soda thing next year - I always have a box of that around!

I hope you and Max have a good holiday weekend. I'll be cleaning out closets, so you aren't the only one that will be having a glamorous time ...

I think the bowls are adorable! :)

Don't get too hot out there in all that heat this weekend.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday weekend. Hugs to my pal Max, too.

Blessings always

I love the colours you have used for your bowls, and will be interested to see how the felting goes.

Have a great weekend - my garage needs clearing out too but I keep finding other things to do instead....

I think they are nice! so sorry you had a little trouble. Are you crazy...it's too hot to work in the garage! I would wait until the evening time to even try to do something like that. The weeds in my yard are taking over...really need to get out there if it would ever STOP raining!!

Hi Meredith,
I Love the bowls. But I really love the baking soda hint. I am going to be stocking up on that. Sam's Club sells a gigantic bag. I will be spreading it out as soon as I get some and let you know!!
Have a great weekend!
How is your son adjusting?
XO Kris

At 11 p.m., it's still 104 degrees outside. Crazy! Your bowls are lovely even if they are a little flimsy. Some of mine have come out like that, too, but I still use them to stuff with gifts for friends. Or as potted plant holders. Enjoy your long weekend. Tammy

These are super cute, Meredith!

Meredith.. didn't you get the Stiffy? It will work well with the bowls. So, the soda doesn't change the soil chemicals to much? No weeds sounds good. It's only 68 degrees here. :-) ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I have some lazy bowls myself. That stuff didn't work for me either. Don't feel lone ranger. By the way, I'm done with the weeds here too. Have a relaxing weekend.

Thank goodness for felting! That should fix your problem. They do look really cute though.

Okay! I'm definitely heading out to the back yard tomorrow with a big box of baking soda. Look out weeds! Here I come!

(They won't know what hit them. I'm gonna tell the Meredith sent me!)

That Baking Soda trick for weeds, I am definitely gonna have to try it. Mere, I say you have given it your all on trying to get the bowls to look the way you wanted, maybe felting is the answer after all. Let us know how the big bowl turns out. I started my garage weeks ago and the heat is back up into the 90's again these past couple of days. I am waiting for cooler days to finish that job. Just thinking about it makes me want to sweat.

Love the bowls, they are so pretty! I'm not sure if it is worth a try, but you could try some thinned (with water) PVA glue...if you could bear to try it and see? When dry it does get rather plastic-y so could work....then again I'm guessing so try it on something first maybe.

The baking soda thing sounds good, and no weedin on the weekend sounds an excellent idea......I wish it was only a little weeding my garden required....it has gotten way out of control with our constant rain summer, the lawn is now positively jungleous!

I'd have to use too much baking soda! There are so many areas on this property with weeds.

Sorry about your baskets! They're awfully pretty, though. I got 3 orders for the crochet banner. That means I have to crochet this weekend and I threw my back out!

90 degrees?! Ouch!!

Those bowls are so cute, what a pity they won't stand up.

Hey Meredith, those bowls are too cute. I was going to suggest the PVA glue trick too. I've only made bowls using single or double crochet in cotton or chunky yarn. I even made one with garden twine but my fingers were cut to shreds afterwards! They seemed to maintain their shape though. I like the look of your 'Granny' bowls and pretty colours. Have a great weekend. x

There is a product called, Stiffy. It comes in liquid form and you can usually find it in the craft stores by the glues.
I have used this on cotton crochet and fabric and it works very well. Your bowls are so pretty, it would be a shame for you to dismiss their original use.

Hmmm...I wonder if fabric glue would do the trick. I recently tried using just a tiny dab on some slippery microfiber yarn ends before hiding them under stitches, and the stuff soaked right through and made a stiff, sharp little spot. (Failed experiment.) But maybe it's just the ticket for stiffening bowls - you could brush it on and let capillary action do the rest. Good luck with them!

I was going to suggest felting but see you got there ahead of me! Hope that works and that you are still happy with your lovely bowls.
