Little B and an unexpected project.......

First off a special thanks to all of you for your wonderful comments about my surprise weekend.  It was so wonderful, I am still basking in the fun memories.  Let me tell about my surprise project yesterday.  I was sitting at my computer on Monday evening when I saw a wee moth flying around my light.  I killed it as fast as I could and not long after I saw another one.  Of course like most yarn lovers I panicked big time.  Could it be they are reproducing in my yarn stash?  Or is it possible they flew in the door when I went out to walk Max. Hmmm......  Like any great detective I got a flash light out and searched every crevice of my big yarn cabinet.  I did not see any sign of a moth reproductive party so I thought things were done.

Yesterday I checked again in the day light.  I really went over every inch of this cupboard but could not find a thing.  But I was creeped out, I mean really creeped out so I decided to take action.  Now don't judge me my friends but I microwaved my wool yarn.  I know there are all sorts of ways to treat these potential yarn killers but I decided on the fastest, most efficient way for me.  I tried to look at each skein to see if I saw anything, which I didn't, but microwaved it anyway.  I let the yarn cool, and believe me when I say I aired it out because microwaved wool smells like wet wool. I put all wool and over 50% wool blends into plastic bags and resorted my yarn cupboard.

Cotton and silk yarns were off the hook with the cooking process, they are able to breath freely on my shelves.  I am really not sure any moth larvae was alive in my stash but I could not take a chance.  So I now have packaged up yarn, which does not make me happy at all.  I like it sitting on my shelves looking inviting not like it can't breath.  I also decided to donate even more yarn, 1,500 yards left my stash so I am finally under 30,000 total yards of yarn in my stash.  I am trying to get a handle on my stash, my closet and my house.

As for this one he has been miserable.  I thought we were getting off easy on Sunday because after two naps he really perked up.  But by Monday afternoon he was miserable with a fever, runny nose and cough.  He stayed home from school Monday due to a previously scheduled follow up appointment, and missed yesterday and today due to this crummy illness.   The sad faces were plentiful these past few days!

Now I think we have finally turned a corner.  He is eating a bit, still coughing and starting to smile again.  This house is very quiet when this little one is under the weather.  I missed his singing and constant chatter.  He is making a comeback that is for sure.

Hope you are having a great week.

Not being a yarn person I would never had thought about moths, but yikes that could ruin a lot couldn't it. Good job taking care of that. Oh poor baby, I hope he feels better soon. Hugs!

Oh my gosh =- I would have freaked out over the moths too. Never thought of microwaving yarn, but if it works, then I'd go for it. Poor Little Buddy, he is always so happy, it's hard to look at a frowning Little Buddy. He also looks as though he is maturing, right before our eyes!

What an amazing weekend -- and so deserved. Your husband deserves kudos for setting up such an amazing weekend!

I can't believe all the work you did on your stash. And who knew what microwaved wool smelled like? I just keep all mine in Rubbermaid bins and cross my fingers.

I am trying to have less in my house, too, and you've inspired me to go through my stash soon.

Hope LB is feeling better!

Oh poor little guy.. tell him his Oregon auntie is suffering with him. I've had a relapse. I'm glad he's turning the corner. I've had a moth or two here.. it is frightening. I hope you never see another one. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Ahhh.....the moth panick....been there done that a time or two. I have all my wool under plastic too. And lots of lavender. I'm so glad Little B is feeling better and though I prefer his smiley face....he's even cute frowning. ;-)

I had moths flying around my house and discovered they were pantry moths. I had to put out traps and get rid of some mixes in the pantry that were harboring them.

I have never thought of microwaving yarn! I had moths in my wooly jumper drawer, should have microwaved those... thanks for the tip. I am glad Little Buddy is feeling better. x

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry about the moths. I hadn't heard of microwaving your yarn. It's nice to know that that's an option. Your stash does look nice and neat on your shelves though. I'm sorry to hear your little guy's been sick again. There's been so much "ick" going around this year. It seems that Miss Piper has been sick more than she's been well this winter. I hope the corner has well and truly been turned and that no one else catches it either.
Blessings my friend,
Betsy

Oh dear, poor little man, I hope he is all better soon. A shame there are moths circling your beautiful stash, I'm glad to see it is all safe though. There were loads of moths here last year for some reason. My teeny tiny stash is safe in two plastic boxes. I hope it is anyway... But then of course there are the wool blankets that are dotted around the place. Now you have me worried! I hope your sweet Little Buddy is back on top form tomorrow - no more sad faces. I know how you like to be kept on your toes! CJ xx

Well, I'm glad your little guy is feeling better. After 2 months, it seems to have finally let go of our household too.
Moths can be awful! I have to get into my garden shed this spring and get rid of hundreds of dead bodies. They didn't get into anything, thank goodness, but boy are they ever gross. I'm not even sure how they got in or what they were doing in there. I just have a lot of clean up to do. I shudder to think of it.
It's great that your yarn stash is okay though, and it is probably a very good thing that you took precautions in cooking it. That would be a lot to lose.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your week, and that you see no more moths.
Andrea

That's good you didn't find any moth larvae in your yarn and took precautions in case. That's too bad that Buddy is feeling under the weather hope he feels better soon!

I like your moth solution!

I've had pantry moths before and it took me forever to figure out where they were hiding. Living in warm places like we do makes us prone to such things at times. I'm sure happy to see that last picture of Z Man smiling. He looked positively miserable in the previous one. Hugs all around.

Have you ever thought of getting some cedar shavings or those cedar blocks to put in with your stash? We found sheets of cedar specifically made to line closets and stapled them to the walls of several of our closets. I also bought bags of cedar shavings and made little net bags, like sachets.

I actually hung up on a friend once when I saw a moth flit by right in front of my face. I panicked and started chasing it around the room. She was very understanding as she is also a knitter. :-)

I hope Little Buddy is completely well by now. Poor guy! It's so sad when they are sick.

Moths....ugh. They strike fear. I have to say the cats like to catch and eat them when they do get in the house. Still one cannot be too careful. The cats also killed a mouse unbeknownst to us as we ate dinner last night. YUCK. We enjoyed our dinner and then went to the family room to find the murder scene. I am so glad they know their job up here in the country!
Lil Buddy sick. That's the worst. Im so glad he is not having any "(s" word) complications. He has the best momma.

I had to do something similar with my yarn recently... though I never though of microwaving it. It's all bagged up now and sprayed down with Lavender water.

Better safe than sorry with all that wonderful yarn! Hopefully that is the last of the moth battles. I'm glad Little buddy is feeling better. I love the Dr. Seuss hat. We're not one for big blow outs but surprise weekends are perfect!

I thought about starting a yarn business but just the idea of an infestation cooled my enthusiasm. Ugh! Glad Little Buddy is feeling better. Everyone (except me - knock on wood!) has been sick here with the kind of cold/flu that just lingers.

gigi knits said...

Would you please come an organize my yarn . I have been thinking about donating .
Hope the little guy is feeling better .
I was wondering have you ever been to Four Purls Yarn Shop in Winter Haven? Thinking of driving down on sat.

Ohhh moths-yuck! I've had to chuck yarn and knits due to moth damage. It's upsetting! Lots of wool zapping for you- smart cookie! Poor Iil b -it's not fun being sick. You know kids are sick when they get very quiet. Hopefully he's feeling better now and I hope you stay well.

Hope LB is much better! There is so much stuff going around here. Makes you just want to hibernate and stay home.

That's alot of yarn. But, I can't criticize because of the hoard of fabric I have. It's just an addiction, isn't it? Oh well, we could have worse habits. LOL

Get well soon Little B!
And oh my, you must have been really scared with those moths!
Poor you! So much work to save your yarn!
Hope they'll stay away now.
Have a nice day, Sigrid

Oh that sad little face! I hope Little B is on the mend and starting to laugh and sing again. How frustrating to have to package your yarn up away from the moths. It may not look as good but at least it will be safe.

If you have never been to "Four Purls Yarn Shop" in Winter Haven . It has be be The Best Shop I have ever been to.
And I have been to many over the years.
Hope you are having a great week end !!'

Oh dear! I hope you didn't have moths and it was a false alarm. How did you microwave your yarn? I'd be afraid of burning it or melting it. I often worry about pests with my yarn because a lot of it is always stored away where it can't be seen. I am hoping I have it wrapped up well but you can never be 100% sure, can you?
Sorry that LB has been ill. We have had an unusually high number of flu cases in South Australia recently which authorities are putting down to an unusually wet summer. The flu vaccinations will not be available for the coming winter season until April but we need to book them now before stocks run out as they do every year. People with high need such as those with respiratory problems or other chronic illnesses can get them through their doctors but need to act early.
Do you have a flu vax system where you live, Meredith?
I'm so glad for all of you that LB has turned the corner and hope that the rest of you stay clear of the flu. xxx

I love the suggestions for preventing moth damage - microwaving, cedar sheets, lavender, sealed in plastic etc. Very helpful. Thank you!
I hope LB is much better by the time you read this too. Hugs!
