A week with so much to say but few words to say it..................

This has been quite a week hasn't it?  Living in Florida has not been a ton of fun.  The murder of an up and coming beautiful and talented singer, the tragic deaths of so many young and beautiful people in a nightclub in Orlando, and yes a tragic alligator attack that took place at Disney.  Three places where young people have gone to have a wonderful time, where they should be safe and they weren't.  As for the alligator that was a tragedy that had more to do with nauture than man, but of course people did play a part.  Feeding those gators like so many people liked to do made them not fear being around people, thus tragedy happened.  Here is my advice for you, if you are coming to Florida for a visit stay away from any fresh water area, a pond or lake might look like fun but there are gators there somewhere close and they are doing what they know how to do, trying to find something to eat.   You can't blame the gator, it is nature.

I am a very, very political person, but usually not on this blog.  But the events of this week have left me horrified and without adequate words to express how terrible it all is.  Yes we watch from the sidelines, but for those living this it must be beyond horrific.  Two of these tragedies have one thing in common, guns.  Don't give that excuse that guns don't kill people, people do......  I do not believe that for one second, people who have guns kill people, of course not all of them but just a few that do can have such an unbelievable impact on the events of our lives.  I am avidly against guns, but I can almost understand a rifle needed for hunting (which I also don't understand but can almost accept).  I can even almost understand a pistol in your home if you feel that is needed to protect your family, I won't join you with this but I can almost get my head around it.  But assault riffles with bullets spewing out of them faster than the speed of sound do not have a place in our lives or in our country.  Sorry if you don't agree with me but that is the way I see it.  I wish we had a gun free society, one where only the police and armed forces were allowed to have them, just think how much safer we would all be and frankly how many lives would be saved.  As for Second Amendment rights, well those who wrote that had no idea that we would eventually have a world where high powered assault weapons could be purchased with little effort.  They did have to protect their property and families, we do not we have a police force to do that for us.

I can't stop thinking about those poor lost lives, those beautiful, young and vibrant people who had so much to offer and so little time to do it.  Their time cut short by one man and his assault rifle.

Little Buddy has helped this week.  I look at him and try to lose myself in his Joy.  I fear for him a bit living in this world of ours.  My other boys are older, they can make decisions and think for themselves, but Little One is so pure and he will eventually be thrust out into a world where tragedies like this are happening more and more often, so much so they are losing their surprise factor.  What another shooting?  It is almost common place.   This will be his normal, how sad is that?

We went to the beach Thursday evening, and to the splash park yesterday.  We have been in the pool, read books, snuggled and laughed.   He even let a two year old little boy borrow his walker at the splash park so he could run around with it.  Little Buddy is different, will he be shot because he can't walk like everyone else, just like those who have been killed for believing something different religion-wise, because of the color of their skin or because of their sexual preference?

I was out of sorts before this last week happened and I am even more so now.  Don't even get me started on one person running for our highest office and the hatred and horribly evil things that come out of his mouth.

My next post won't be political I promise, but to write about a beautiful flower, or my latest knitting project just seems to be so outside of my reality right now.

To those of you celebrating Father's Day today I wish you a lovely day.  This is the first without my Father, who taught me that all of us are equal, race, skin color and religion do not matter and should not divide us, that everyone should help those in need even if that puts you at odds with others, and that guns only have a place in hunting and should not be used anywhere else.  My Father was a hunter who as far as I know did not ever shoot a living thing.

If I have lost some of you readers for my beliefs I wish you well.  I am who I am and that is just the way it is right now.  I wish you all a safe and peaceful week.

Aww Your first Fathers Day is a sad meloncholy event. He is with you.
The events of the week were horrific. Inhumane, ugly. and very disturbing.
We must have faith in all the youth of this world. They will find a way.
Generations before them found a way.
THere is so much love in our blog /knit community, it is a good start and a good stay.
Love the lil water buddy

Meredith, the tragedies have struck close to home for me on many levels. I am so angry and sad at the senseless killing. Guns! Also our political choices are awful and I fear for our nation, our people, the children. I have no words to describe how down I am. My Grands also give me joy like Little Buddy does. Thank goodness for that.
hugs,
Linda

Hi Meredith, I have been reading your blog for a long time but this is the first time I have commented. I have nothing to say except that I am so sad for the people of Florida this week. I live in England and can't imagine being able to purchase a firearm legally, and for that I am grateful. I hope one day that the citizens of the US will rally together to reform your gun laws. As for the person running for presidency, I have no words. I have two small children myself, and it's a scary world, but we have to keep hoping that things will get better. Sending much love to you and your beautiful children. Kate.

I so believe in everything you just said . We cannot even begin to feel the pain these families are going thought .
And as for the man running for president of our country standing there making fun of the handicapped & also
Belittling women. .What is America coming too.
Wish more people could see guns kill people!!

Meredith you said it all so much better than I could have! One of the massacre victims was a young girl from here, whose parents took her to Orlando to celebrate her high school graduation, and a full scholarship to the college she wanted to attend. Her cousin took her out to celebrate and yesterday her family was all back here to bury her. For no good reason.

As you say though, Little Buddy is a bright spot. He seems like he enjoys feeling like a 'big shot' and doing everything with happiness. Who knows, maybe by the time he is older, our world will have improved and we can all feel more hopeful. In the meantime, I am happy that he has all of you to look after him.

Take care, and be sure to kiss Max for me. Hopefully this week will just be plain old boring for all of us. :-)

It is a crazy, scary world, that is for sure. I think that every good thing we do, even little acts, helps add balance to the world. At least I hope so, gives me the feeling that we still have a measure of control:-)

I love to see that little boy enjoying the simple JOYS! You are raising quite the water baby!

I too wish we lived in a world where only the police and military had guns. Unfortunately, I think we are in the minority with that opinion.

While it HAS been a very trying week in Orlando, I have also seen great amounts of compassion and if I am right, a few minds have been opened just a little bit more.

Meredith.. I believe in our right to say what we want to on our blogs. I've also been somewhat depressed for a while and I think what happened in Orlando has effected me.. so many young lives with so much promise. ::sigh::

Thank you for sharing Little Buddy and his joyousness with us.. his love of water is obvious. We have that in common! Gracie and I are going to a big mineral pool spa tomorrow.. I'll take pix.

Give Max a hug and a few strokes on his furry back for me. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I agree with your thoughts. I live in the uk and 98% of the population doesn't have access to guns. It makes it such a safer place. I would love to move to the US but would never whilst there is the qty and type of guns.

Each of the tragedies you mentioned are heartbreaking and living in a world filled with as much hate as we do - well you need a little bright star to grab onto. I'm glad Buddy arrived in your world for you to grab onto. Such innocence is a blessing. Take care wishing you a brighter week. xx

Seeing Little Buddy made me smile, he always does. The sad events this week both in Florida and here, one of our MPs were shot sickens me. We all need to be strong and speak out against a society that thinks guns are OK, they are not and have no part in fuelling hatred. Take care Meredith, sending you a hug and a wish for a better, safer world.

All I can say is: I totally agree with you! Lots of love from Mirjam.

Oh Meredith, I am glad you find joy in Little Buddy. I am saddened by the state of the world, not just in Florida but all around the globe. Shootings are much rarer here in Britain but just a few days ago a young woman, a politician, was shot on the streets of a small town by a man who called himself 'death to traitors, freedom for Britain' in Court. I am utterly shocked. Guns should never be available freely. Gun crime can not be entirely prevented but restricting availability goes a long way towards protecting people's lives. The second amendment appears to be used as free licence to make money. More resources should be allocated to education and mental health care, preventing misguided pointless attacks. Lets try and focus on the small beauties of life, nature, our families and friends, find joy in our interactions with them, and nurture in each other the belief that everyone is a human being first and foremost. I appreciate your political post, it is good to have a voice. Lots of love to all of you. xx

Senseless violence happens every where, it is a sad part of all our lives. There is nowhere now where you can be truly safe. I think that we can only take the normal precautions to keep as safe as possible and then try to get as much pleasure from life as we possibly can. I hope that Buddy will continue to delight his family and us readers, his smile spreads joy like sunshine.

Meredith, I completely agree with everything you say. I'm horrified at the gun crime in America and the endless mass shootings. Whilst it does happen elsewhere too, the figures speak for themselves. The more gun ownership in a country, the more tragedies. The news can make the world seem a very dark place at times can't it. I'm glad you and Little Buddy have been having some summer fun. The splash park looks brilliant. I'm wishing you both a good week. CJ xx

It's been quite a week on both sides of the pond, hasn't it? We had an MP shot and stabbed to death, not that far from where I live, and that's been shocking too. I wonder where it will all end. Thank goodness you have Little Buddy to bring joy in to your life.

You well know that I agree with you on everything you've said here today. There should be no access to guns in my ideal world, but if that cannot be, there should be no access to assault weapons period, and there should be no access to any guns for those who are on a watch list. I also think there should be a waiting period, with tests to pass and training, and a mental health check (don't know how that would actually be worked out, but surely a doctor should be consulted...)

As for The Orange Man, he is dangerous and a hop, skip and a jump away from Hitler and Stalin. He makes my skin crawl.

I agree with you about assault weapons, how in the world did we become a nation that allows anyone to own such a weapon. As for hunting I've always thought that if you eat what you hunt I'm fine with that, if you're trophy hunting I hate it. We keep an air pistol around, that's about the extent of our arming.
As for the alligator, you're right, people have fed them and they come to expect it and become aggressive when they don't get it.
I wouldn't swim or wade in any natural body of water in the south, in addition to alligators we have poisonous snakes, snapping turtles and leeches.
How sweet your little boy looks.
I'm so glad our daughter is grown and living in Japan, a long way from home, but a safe place with no guns.

Araignee said...

It was certainly a terrible week for news and you must have a screw loose if you don't feel a need to stop the madness.
As for the alligator, I was just on those canals with the baby Grands in January and they feel like a place where wild things rule. The contrast between the artificial Disney world and the real world that surrounds it was quite apparent to me. Too bad it wasn't for those poor parents. My ex-inlaws who lived in Venice used to feed alligators marshmallows in their yard. It gave me goosebumps to see the parade that would line up for their nightly treat. Silly people.

So well said! I've been so upset this week that I couldn't even blog. Couldn't find my words. Thank you for finding them for me! We all need to vote these horrible people out of our government. Most especially that horrible Orange Man!

Like you I was taught to love my neighbor as myself without prejudice about race, creed, ethnicity, sexual orientation or nationality. The horrific events around the world that I now am aware of on a regular basis grieve me. I have especially been thinking of you this week because of the tragic events in Florida knowing how much you care for others and want to help make life safe and beautiful. How to help our world be safer and to protect its beauty through law and law enforcement is ever challenging to me and I respect and appreciate your views about guns and our current political climate! The Apostle Paul encouraged the early Christians to pray for those in authority and I am trying to do that more and more. In the midst of the tragedies around us I am glad you have been able to share sweet times with your family and share some of those times with us, too. Sending you love with hugs xxxxxxxxxx

Andrea Ostapovitch said...

You hit the nail on the head when you said that times were different when those laws were written. So much has changed, and we have to evolve alongside those changes. We have a wonderfully organized police force and there is little to no need for guns, especially guns like that one. The singer would have been much more difficult to reach without a gun. And the nightclub would not have seen death is such numbers. Guns make killing easy and in my opinion are for cowards.

On another note, I love all those wonderful photos of Little Buddy. What a sweetheart he is. For every person that won't accept him because he is different, there are thousands that will. But your're right, it only takes one act of hate to drastically affect our lives. That's why we have to come out in the thousands to support each other.

Sending love your way. Have a beautiful week.

Andrea

Little Buddy is a light in a very dark sky for so many of us. This past week was a sad one, indeed. On the news yesterday morning they said that since the Orlando night club incident, 207 more people across our country had lost their lives to gun violence. In 7 days. It is madness.
As Claudia said, the Orange Man is a worry for everyone. Spewing hate and fear is not the way to lead a country. I am appalled that he has anyone following him at all. It, too, is madness.
The result of all of this is that I want to bury my head in the sand. That isn't the answer, either. But it seems to be a way to try and put it out of my head as it is just all too much. Sad times, indeed.

What a week, indeed! Such horrible events! I'm with you....I often wish that guns had never been invented. Or, at least those crazy, overpowered ones! At this point, I don't know what the answer is to fix the mess the world is in but I'm also with you about that crazy guy that's running for president...he could make things SO much worse. It's scary!

Enjoy that sweet little guy of yours. He's adorable!

Hugs!

Thank you for the heartwarming photos.

I second what Claudia, above, said in her comments. We Americans do not need The Worst Of Us represented in the highest Office in the land.

As a Greater Clevelander, I am hopeful that those coming for the convention don't ruin our city or hurt each other. What has happened to my country? Right now, I'm too sad and disappointed to be angry.

So very well said in every way. I will never understand having guns. If you are in the military or police then yes, have them to do your job, but otherwise really. Who needs one! There aren't wild animals attacking us so I don't see any need for anyone else to have one. One of our politicians was shot last week apparently in connection with the referendum we are having this week. She was a wife and mother and just doing her job and she was shot. I don't understand these things.

Hugs to you my dear! Glad Little Buddy had a great day! xx

After reading your post I can understand why you are feeling as you are. When so many things happen that are tragedies you do have to question mankind. When my children were young and things of the tragic nature happened, it used to spark off something within me and I would churn things over and imagine it was my children being affected. I totally get your feelings sweetpea. I'll be back xx.

I'm so sorry I've missed so many posts, Meredith~ I keep writing this to everyone. I'm drowning in obligations and the busyness that is dragging me down...meds that make me so fatigued I literally bend over the sink when I'm washing dishes. Enough complaining though.

I really love these pictures Z and got such a kick out of him giving his walker to another child! That must have made him feel cool! I simply can't get over those big brown eyes!

I have my feeling about what occurred in Orlando, all three tragedies so hard to comprehend sometimes. I abhor guns. My sister is married to a police officer. I don't like to be around him when he's carrying simply because guns scare me so much. I have some friends who hunt (to kill) and I wonder how they come home and pet their dogs. I feel Disney had a huge responsibility in keeping their grounds safe and failed big time. Enough said there. The only thing our little orange emoji has done that's positive is to get people talking and involved in the election.

Thanks for your visits. Again I hope to become a better visitor. Hope your summer (other than these upsetting events) is going smooth!

Hello sweet Meredith. As I read your post all of the emotions of the past week and the tragic news from Florida came back to me again. Then I read through each comment and Gracie's said exactly what I was hoping to express to you, only she writes much more eloquently than I do. The world is indeed a sad place these days, and I worry about my grandchildren's future in it, but we mustn't give up hope. I HAVE to believe that good will win in the end. Little Buddy's pictures were wonderful today. And he is sharing too! Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just play well together?
Blessings always my sweet friend.

It was an awful week, and must seem so much more so when you live near where the tragedies happened. I think you are right. These incidents are going to soon become the norm. I'm not an expert, but it looks to me like the only way to turn things around is to change the Second Amendment. If that doesn't happen, when push comes to shove the courts have no way to rule in favour of gun control. Laws that are passed will be overturned, and there is a disincentive for politicians to push for gun control legislation. And the reality is, changing that amendment would be a very difficult thing to do.

Oh Meredith, I just love lil Buddy. His bright eyes and happy smile always bring joy to my heart. I feel how much you love him and he and you are so blessed to have come together.

I agree with you on everything you said about guns and what your sister said is what we are always saying in our home. Why can't people be tested, examined and tested before purchasing guns, any guns.
It amazes me that I am a chronic pain patient and must jump thru hoops and treated as a criminal to get my meds. yet I could go anywhere and buy a gun.
It is ridiculous.

Thank you for sharing all that you did and all that you do....Blessings to you...Sandra

I feel even more lucky to live in the UK now where we have gun crime but on a much smaller scale but it does happen nonetheless. I find it hard to understand why some US citizens feel they have this absolute right to have a gun. I am 43 and I have never felt the need for a gun, it is part of our culture all the way through growing up that they are for trained people - Some Police sections, Forces and trained sports people/hunters. I would say on the whole (apart from in crime situations)they are very much respected here. Hugs to you and your thoughts this week. Jo x

Hi Meredith,

We have heard the awful news from Florida all the way in Australia. Every time we heard of another event and that it was somewhere in Florida yet again, I thought of you and wondered how it affected you.
We were thinking that perhaps it was 'Florida week/month' because this week we got another news story from Florida about beach closures due to blue-green algae! So I am feeling very much for you and your friends and family who are living through so much turmoil at the moment.
I cannot blame you for being political in your blog - when politics hits home so hard, that is what happens.

Politics is actually the reason I am late to your blog. The leadership of Australia hangs in the balance this week as we wait for vote counting from Saturday's federal election. I've been busy wading through information and researching candidates etc.

As for the guns issue - people outside the USA are puzzled about the need for individual citizens to hold arms. In Australia, the only ones expected to carry weapons are police, military and farmers and rangers. It is a licence system and the laws are strict. Certain kinds of weapons and firearms are banned from import to Australia.

The increasing violence we are seeing in the world combined with increasing intolerance of differences is certainly a real worry for the future.

On the flipside, the young people I meet (aged 14-28) give me lots of hope. They have intelligent ideas, they are better educated than generations before them, they are interested in world affairs and have the energy to fight for change but can they get the attention of those in power?

Often governments are dismissive of young people's ideas and then complain that young people are disengaged from the political process! I would argue that our current politicians are more purposefully disengaged from young people rather than the other way around.
I must commend President Obama for making a big effort to engage with young people. After all, our youth is our future.

Have hope, Meredith!
